thankful for: the last waltz

November 25, 2010

The Last WaltzIt was on this day 34 years ago that The Band played their legendary farewell concert at San Francisco’s Winterland. Produced by Bill Graham and featuring some of the biggest names in music, The Band’s historic Thanksgiving performance is well documented on film and a three-LP album. However, the performances on those official releases are famously overdubbed, remixed, and in some cases re-recorded altogether. This holiday I urge you to let your real indulgence (besides the turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and pies) be this unedited full-length recording of that night’s concert. Wolfgang’s Vault (possibly my favorite place on the internet) has offered up a free stream of the raw audio track from that night, and for anyone with an interest in The Band, the 70’s, great music, or happiness in general owes it to themselves to check it out.

It Makes No Difference” – because I love Rick Danko, and I always will. And because it sounds so damn good without any editing at all.

Happy Thanksgiving from That Mercury Sound!
