so you wanna be a rock & roll star?

March 3, 2010

SXSW is just around the corner and Austin is starting to really buzz. I couldn’t be more excited about experiencing it for the first time and you can expect a full post-SX report from me when it’s all over. But in honor of the five billion bands that are about to descend upon a town with at least two billion of its own already I decided to compile my Top Ten Songs About Playing in a Band. This ain’t no Guitar Hero…

Money for NothingDire Straits

Money for nothing and chicks for free. Enough said.

Jukebox HeroForeigner

If you told me you’ve never played air guitar to this song I would not believe you.

Shooting StarBad Company

The classic cautionary tale about achieving rock stardom.

Turn the PageBob Seger

Bob Seger laments the dark side of life on the road. Metallica’s cover of this one is worthwhile as well.

So You Want to be a Rock & Roll StarThe Byrds

The Byrds make it sound so simple….

We’re An American BandGrand Funk Railroad

You could consider this song the flip side to Turn the Page.  Here the road is all partying, women, poker, glory, and booze.

Into the Great Wide Open Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Boys meets girl. Boy gets guitar. Boy has a number one. The video for this song, featuring Johnny Depp, made quite the impact on me as a child.

Play Some SkynyrdJohn Eddie

John Eddie gives voice to the plight of all bar bands out there without a number one of their own.

It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)AC/DC

Indeed it is boys, indeed it is.

Stories We Could TellThe Everly Brothers

Sung in the voice of seasoned and road weary musicians, this song sums it all up for me. “And if this all blows up and goes to hell/I can still see us sitting on a bed in some motel/listening to the stories we could tell.” And I actually prefer Tom Petty’s version of this one, he brings the tempo up quite a bit.

Rock Concert Crowd

musicnotesMy personal dedication to all the bands at SXSW and beyond: “Even if it Breaks Your Heart” by the incredible Will Hoge. Keep playing y’all.

You forgot to include The Road by Tenacious D.

Great list, but you forgot a couple :)

“Nuthin But a Good Time!” – Poison

    &

“I wanna Rock and Roll all Night” – Kiss

Of course it is a matter of opion, but Nuthin But a Good Time is what inspired me to become a guitar player, as cheesy as it may be, it still rocks!

Money for Nothin and It’s a Long way to the top… are my two favorites from this list.

Funny, first thought was Tenacious D, too, but not that track. Rock Your Socks says it best:

“Now I know what a lot of you are sayin’: I just figured out what I’m gunna do with the rest of my days. Get me an over-sized guitar, gain 40 pounds, and be the next D. Well I got sour news for you, Jack. It ain’t that easy.

For instance, are you willing to make the commitment to wakin’ up at the crack a’ noon, for deep-knee rock squats? Seven or eight at a time. In a row. How ’bout, are you willing to make the commitment to rock-hard tasty abs washer-board style? Glistening in the sun. How ’bout, are you willin’ to make the commitment, wakin’ up, goin’, ‘OK, it’s gig time, what T-shirt am I gonna wear? Can’t decide! Can’t decide! Brain aneurysm!”
